Wise Law Offices LLC (WL) partners Kevin G. Burke is featured and pictured in a January 3, 2014 Chicago Daily Law Bulletin (CDLB) story for securing a $32 million settlement after negotiations with a major Chicago-area hospital in the case of Erica Norals v. The University of Chicago Medical Center, et al. Both lawyers represented the mother of a young Chicago girl in a lawsuit alleging that the hospital and five of its doctors were negligent in the girl's diagnosis and care resulting in the amputation of both her arms and both her legs.
The article details how the then 11-year old girl was hospitalized with a fever and pain in her right leg and showed symptoms of septic arthritis, a dangerous joint infection found most often in children. Although the girl had come to the hospital early enough for treatment to be effective, the delay in administering antibiotics resulted in infection that led to amputation of both her arms below the elbows and both her legs below the knees.
Mr. Burke stated in the article, "there were huge fundamental errors" in the girl's treatment, adding that "in 23 years (of practicing law), it's hard to imagine a number of blunders like this."
