The elevator cables installed at the Sheraton Towers Hotel in Chicago were defective in producing an unusual black-tarry substance when in use. Our client, an elevator mechanic's helper, was cleaning an accumulation of the substance off the elevator drive shaft when his right arm was caught and amputated, along with several fingers on his left hand. We sued on his behalf, faulting the defendant for failing to replace the cables after the condition was identified, and secured a $1.55 million settlement for medical expenses and lost future wages.
