One day at the construction site you were working on, you were hit in the head by a metal pipe. Perhaps your head bled a little, you had a headache for a few weeks or months, and some blurry vision and ringing the ears. You thought you were fine. But after the injury, you had difficulty concentrating, forgetfulness, and trouble organizing your thoughts. You explode at your loved ones. Could you have sustained a traumatic brain injury or TBI?

Anger is a common problem

Many who sustain a traumatic brain injury will experience emotional changes such as depression, irritability, mood swings, violent verbal or even physical outbursts. Angry outbursts, and the inability to control it are common for those who experience TBI, with as many as 50% of victims reporting difficulty. You may feel like a different person, or your loved ones feel as if you are acting like a stranger. Your reduced ability to control your anger may seriously impact your marriage, friendships, job, and self-esteem. Many end up divorced or develop a negative job history after being fired repeatedly in the months and years following a TBI.

Delayed TBI diagnosis

It is not uncommon for an injury’s impact to be delayed, not showing up for days, weeks, even months after it occurred. Do you think you may have sustained a TBI at work? Even if you did not report it, you still may be able to recover compensation, depending on the circumstances. In order for the injury to be one in which you would receive compensation, an attorney will have to prove causation, linking the injury to an event that occurred at work. This is done through use of expert testimony and the opinions of physicians experienced in traumatic brain injury.

Let medical and legal professionals assist

If you believe you may have suffered a brain injury after a blow to the head, fall, or other event that occurred at your workplace, the best thing to do is to speak with an attorney about your situation and diagnosis. Do not write it off and assume nothing can be done to help, because that is an assessment that should be left to medical and legal professionals. There are many different therapies that may help you regain functionality and help you manage your symptoms.
