Our client was an electrician working in the basement of a downtown Chicago condo building when he tripped over scrap cables left near an elevator shaft. He tumbled down the elevator shaft and was knocked unconscious when he slammed onto large elevator springs and cinder blocks below, leaving him with brain damage and spinal cord injuries that affected his autonomic nervous system. He could no longer control his heart rate, blood pressure, or temperature, and he had to learn how to walk, write and balance again. We filed a workers' compensation and personal injury lawsuit against his employer and the elevator company and demonstrated the work-site negligence, resulting in a Cook County Circuit Court verdict awarding our client, his wife and their five children an $8 million settlement.
