Illinois residents that have GE range ovens in their kitchens may want to check the model numbers. GE has recalled 132,000 gas and electric ranges that were sold in the U.S. as well as 12,960 ranges that were sold in Canada. The affected ranges could potentially tip over if their anti-tip brackets are not repaired.
When and where the ranges were sold
The GE ranges that are under recall were sold between May 2021 and July 2021 under several different model names including GE Profile, Hotpoint and Conservator. Home appliance stores such as Lowe’s, Home Depot and Best Buy carried the recalled ranges. The ranges were both gas and electric powered and were sold for between $580 and $4,600 each.
Tip-over hazards can be fatal
The GE ranges that are under recall can potentially tip over if a heavy object is placed on an open oven door. However, the potential hazard is only an issue when the anti-tip bracket is not installed or installed incorrectly. GE is offering free in-home repairs of the anti-tip bracket. If you own one of the affected ranges, you can call GE to schedule a repair.
One child is killed by a furniture tip-over about every two weeks in the U.S. Faulty range ovens are to blame for most of the tip-over fatalities that involve appliances. However, a majority of tip-over fatalities involve furniture in the bedroom. Consumer safety laws require all range ovens to be sold with an anti-tip bracket. Manufacturers that sell unsafe furniture and appliances can be sued for injuries in defective products claims.
No reported accidents involving the GE ranges
So far, there have been no reported accidents caused by the faulty anti-tip bracket on the GE range ovens, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. This may be because no accidents have occurred or because accidents that did occur just haven’t been reported yet.
